Leave statue alone

Re Joe Warmington, Dec. 11: Winston Churchill was a greater leader, and more of a man, than David Miller could ever be.

Do not even contemplate the relocation of his statue.

Who do you people think you are, anyway?

The man galvanized the British nation, and for that matter, the entire Commonwealth.

He kept them inspired throughout the Battle of Britain and the Battle of the Atlantic, and saw them through to their ultimate triumph over Hitler and his evil, murderous, unrepentant Nazi thugs.

Compare that to your greatest triumph — the cancellation of a bridge to the Island Airport — a move that cost us $35 million and untold embarrassment!

Don’t mess with those things that matter more than you.

Leave Winston alone.

Winnie should stay

I was honoured to be on the committee which, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Winston Churchill statue unveiling at City Hall on Oct. 23, 2002,launched a fundraising drive to improve the area around the statue. Over $30,000 was raised from donors in six provinces.Eight park benches were installed as well as additional trees and four plaques detailing highlights of Churchill’s life and achievements. The full narratives of the plaques can be read on www.winstonchurchillcanada.ca. In a speech the great man gave on Dec. 30, 1941 in the House of Commons in Ottawa, he said, “we are not made of sugar candy.” If the winning design for the square relocates the statue out of the square,the city fathers will soon realize the people who owe their freedom to Churchill’s leadership are also not made of sugar candy!
