And they deride Councilor Ford when he puts forward his bread and butter cuts.......
City horror warnings came in '03... now Toronto faces a $600 M hole |
After watching our local politicians not make any decision at all on taxes at City Hall last Monday, I called them gutless in an editorial the next day.
Whether you like or hate the $356 million in proposed taxes from land transfer and vehicle registration fees is beside the point. They should have voted yes or no -- not maybe later.
The day the editorial ran, I found myself surrounded by the right-wing caucus in the council chamber.
Karen Stintz, Denzil Minnan-Wong, Case Ootes and Mike Feldman were gathered around telling me why it's wise for the city to wait until after the provincial election to vote on the land transfer and vehicle registration taxes.
They believe there's lots of money to come from Queen's Park and waiting will put pressure on the big three parties.
They believe the priorities at the clam shell are out the window and spending goes forward on everything -- pointing to the city passing the climate change plan, even though there's no green in the bank accounts to do anything about going greener. They believe the private sector needs to get involved, not be shut out -- look at Union Station, for example.
They obviously have a point.
