Leave The Libraries Alone.....Go After Waste

10% reduction in councilors office budgets..........$230,000
Don't buy Theatre Pasille (whatever)...................$1,200,000

Add your ideas.....and there would be no reason to ask the libraries, which are very important to a lot of people if the traffic I see at my local library is any indication, to reduce their services. In fact we should be expanding the services.......

Libraries agree to cuts

July 26

Toronto Public Library has had to make some difficult decisions about cuts to our service in response to the city's request to generate savings to be put toward reducing its 2008 operating budget shortfall.

Since announcing our cost-containment measures, which include cancellation of Sunday service at select library branches from September to December 2007, a hiring freeze and a $330,000 reduction in our library materials budget, we have had an outpouring of disappointment from our customers, mixed with strongly voiced support for Toronto Public Library. The reaction isn't a surprise to us; it only underscores the critical role our 99 library branches play in the lives of many Torontonians.

One of the questions that comes up quite frequently is, "Why are you cancelling your Sunday service when this is such a busy day?" Sundays are not considered part of the regular working week. Therefore, cancelling Sunday service from September to December allows us to reduce staffing costs that can generate real savings between now and the end of the year. This gives us immediate results and is the easiest to reverse.

I have to laugh at those screaming blue murder on Miller's government's budget problems.

Generally the conservative side of city council have not been truthful on their side with regards to how to go about solving things. The best they can do is scream about office budgets etc., which, if there are severe cuts, might net a million in savings if we're lucky, and of course the flap about the theatre. But none of them have so far come up with any real plausible planto solve the 500 million (!) shortfall.

Right I believe you yammered about paying the union wages. So go ahead and implement minimum wage. And good luck with that by the way.

Show a detailed set of numbers and a plan to back up your assertion that wiping out the unions and paying less will save 500 million, and perhaps I'll take you seriously.

Where has this been suggested; "Right I believe you yammered about paying the union wages. So go ahead and implement minimum wage."

The City already has enough trouble retaining garbage collectors and TTC operators. For those who are in love with the free market, that should signal workers may be underpaid.
