Toronto Silly Hall At Work

Busted by the art police

Mural must be removed after failing 'good taste' test -- as defined by Sandra Bussin

For three years Darlene Richards-Loghrin fought a losing battle with a gang of "taggers" who repeatedly defaced the office building she owns on Kingston Rd.

Last summer, the real estate lawyer figures she had the graffiti on the building's blank west wall ?-- overlooking an alleyway -- painted over in grey at least seven or eight times.

"It (the wall) would be clean for a week and then the ugly tags were back," she says, noting the police led her to believe there was not much they could do either.

So it was "out of frustration" last October that Richards-Loghrin decided to pursue the idea of painting a mural on the wall-- hoping it would stop the graffiti.

She hired five high school students who are studying art to produce the mural, giving them specific rules on what it should not include. While she felt the mural should appeal to the young people who study with the Kumon math program located on the building's first floor, she said she was adamant that it be "tasteful" and not include any sexual innuendo or promote hatred and violence.

Since the mural has been up, the wall has "not been tagged" a single time, she reports.

That notwithstanding, Richards-Loghrin has been told by the city the art she commissioned is not art at all -- but graffiti -- and must be removed.

I have a great solution to the graffiti "problem". NO WALLS!!
No walls, no graffiti!
Actually, that's not realistic.....how about no paint no graffiti.....or, no kids no graffiti?
How about, no imagination no graffiti. Stay home and play video games. Don't question athority.
You will only speak when spoken to. Wear a tie. Banker, Lawyer, Dentist, Business man.....no graffiti.
Make the right choice. Graffiti is for chumps.
WELL....I'm going to HELL!!!
I'm 40 years old and still "paint graffiti"! WHATTAYA THINK OF THAT!!!
Graffiti isn't about fitting into the system. Graffiti is about smashing the system and reminding YOU! that that building that you want to keep GREY, is just a building and nothing more. It has no real value but the value that the system puts on it. Like time, it's just an invention to oppress. Graffiti is freedom. It's an instinct that is holly and should not be suppressed.
I believe that advertising is more criminal than graffiti. Advertising stalks us and play with our minds. Unfotunately, economy is all in the system and advertising feeds into the economy so, it's no a crime.
You're all programed robots in the matrix chained to your SUVs. Humbug!
