Comrade Miller says; ""I have been extremely clear for the last year and a half of the consequences to Toronto if we don't achieve new revenue sources," he said." and that begs the question; "What has he done in the last year and a half, in fact three years, to cut expenses?" Sweet diddly squat! In fact I will bet we have spent a couple of million dollars, chump change to Miller, on "Toronto Speaks" and other public sessions, most of which the mayor didn't even attend which is an example of how these clowns view public input.
Transit riders will get a reprieve of more than a month on a possible fare hike and a threatened shutdown of the Sheppard subway and some lightly used bus routes as the city moved ahead yesterday with spending cuts worth $100-million this year.
At an emergency meeting, the Toronto Transit Commission agreed to listen to the public in coming weeks about the possible loss of service before making a final decision in mid-September.
The decision to delay was made after a week of high political drama in which city councillors handed David Miller his biggest defeat as mayor when they postponed approval, by one vote, of his request for two new taxes, worth $350-million, that he argues are vital to Toronto's fiscal future.
But if he is to win the next council vote on Oct. 22, Mr. Miller faces a stiff challenge to persuade skeptics that the city's fiscal house is in order.
Yesterday, using campaign-style rhetoric, Mr. Miller denied he had created an artificial crisis with threats to cut transit and other services.
"I have been extremely clear for the last year and a half of the consequences to Toronto if we don't achieve new revenue sources," he said.
