CUPE vows to target Liberals over custodian cuts

TORONTO — The Canadian Union of Public Employees is vowing to use its 250,000 members to target Liberals in the fall election.

Although the union's head Sid Ryan says he is running as a New Democrat in the October election, he says the campaign is not self-serving.

He says the union is targeting Liberals because they have presided over hundreds of cuts to school support workers.

Ryan says school boards were forced to cut 500 custodians, education assistants and secretaries last year.

He says a union study shows 60 per cent of Ontario boards are poised to cut some 575 positions to balance their budgets this year.

Ryan says the union has high hopes of defeating Liberals in close ridings like Hamilton, Windsor, North Bay and Oshawa -- where Ryan himself will likely be running.
