Zagat's Best Fast Food Outlet Choice A Surprise To Some
They're best known for their ratings of the world's great restaurants. But Zagat, which is generally acknowledged to publish the finest guides to fine dining in the world, isn't above slumming once a year. The restaurant rankers have come out with their 2007 list of the best fast food chains in North America and their choices may leave the Golden Arches looking a little tarnished.
The editors have picked Wendy's as the chain with the best hamburgers, beating out McDonald's and Burger King. More than 5,500 experts took part in the survey, and 30 per cent chose the chain that Dave Thomas built for knowing 'where's the beef.' The home of the Whopper garnered 22 per cent, while Mickey D's only notched a small 13 per cent of the votes.
But the taste testers didn't shut out the home of Ronald McDonald on everything. Their fries were voted the best in show, with an overwhelming 63 per cent preferring their fried potatoes to everyone else's. Burger King and Wendy's only garnered 10 per cent support.
And it appears those menu staples remain at the forefront of all the chains' biggest business interests. Burgers and fries beat out the likes of sub sandwiches, pizza and wraps for favourite overall fast food.
But it may be a case of do as I say, not as I do. A full 93 per cent of those surveyed admit they know the meals are filled with high calories and high fat, but 79 per cent add taste is the most important factor when it comes to picking where they want to chow down and they're willing to take the good with the bad.
So who scored the lowest when it came to food quality over all? The answer is a place where your kids don't care about the meal anyway - Chuck E. Cheese, which still manages to put your money where its mouse is.
Still, it's not really a big concern. After all, if you need a Zagat Guide to tell you where to get a quick burger and fries, maybe you're not hanging out in the best establishments in the first place.
