Several trees lining two west-end Toronto residential neighbourhoods will be cut down after being infested with the Asian longhorned beetle.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced Friday trees in the Jane and Finch and Jane and Sheppard area were being attacked by the beetle, known to destroy healthy hardwood trees.
According to a news release issued by the CFIA, trees that are located within 200 metres of the infested trees will be enough to stop the spreading infestation. The infested trees were first identified in this past summer.
"These affected areas are within the existing regulated area, therefore no additional regulatory restrictions are required," the news release said.
Residential and commercial property owners, whose land will be affected, will receive notices in the mail about the tree removal. The CFIA will offer those property owners compensation to make up for the costs of disposing and then replacing the trees.
