POINT OF VIEW: John Tory for Ontario
Elections aren't about having perfect choices. They're about making the best decision from the choices we have.
Full Point of View
It was an oddball Thanksgiving weekend editorial meeting yesterday with Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty. But no one was talking turkey, and we're sleepwalking to another Liberal majority. That's the impression you came away with. McGuinty was so sanctimonious and smug, so settled in the groove of his message track, you know he's on cruise control until Wednesday. That's when voters will obediently do the knee-jerk thing and send him back to Queen's Park. There we were, all seated around editorial page editor Rob Granatstein's dining room table, tape recorders whirring, cameras flashing, hoping desperately for a break from the tedious mantra he's been spewing all campaign. Ask McGuinty why people are about to give him a new mandate, despite his broken-promise record, and you get this: "We have kept the overwhelming number of our promises." Huh? Coal plants? Tax hikes? Autistic kids? Tolls on the 407? Give me a break! According to him, bringing in the massive so-called health premium was one of the toughest decisions he's ever had to make. |
