The only good thing that might come out of this is that Dr. David Suzuki might lose his citizenship in Algoreland and have to go out and get a job.
Canada under investigation by Kyoto committee
Updated Wed. May. 7 2008 3:45 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
A Kyoto Protocol regulatory body will investigate Canada for issues relating to its database of greenhouse gas emissions.
"The question relates to Canada's national registry (not to accounting)," said an informal informational note by the enforcement branch of the Kyoto Protocol compliance committee.
Are You Kidding Me?
The Kyoto Accord is a joke. I can't believe we were railroaded into signing onto this. Sorry all of you left wing radicals, but the Kyoto Accord is a joke.
Sunny
The Conservative gov't has not even tried to comply because that party gets hefty donations from Big Oil.
GHGs were dropping under then Environment Minister Stephane Dion in 2005. The conservatives came along and got rid of many programs which they later reintroduced under a new name while trying to push for 2006 to be the base year.
Obviously, Alberta & Saskatchewan will be the source of greater GHGs.
Don Harris
"If the committee finds Canada is not in compliance, the committee can take the following steps:
........Suspend it from participating in any of Kyoto's emissions credits or carbon trading mechanisms"
Ooh, that's really gonna hurt.
What's next? Double secret probation?
The Kyoto accord is nothing but a farce.
Canada out of Kyoto.
Now!
Mark
Are you kidding me!?! So what!
FCS
Wow, what else are they going to do? Take our allowance and send us to bed without dinner?
I don't recall electing any Koyoto protocol Regulating body. As such it should stay the hell out of Canada's afairs.
David C
Who and what authority gives the Kyoto regulatory body the right to investigate our country?. That needs to change as of today! Canada is a sovereign country! We Canadians will set our own environmental laws. Isn't it easy for non-oil producing countries etc., that want our oil badly, to criticize us. Perhaps we should close the valves which feed international markets. Then watch the attitude change in a real hurry! Not to mention the price of a barrel of oil outside our borders. Perhaps it is time to revisit NAFTA. Under NAFTA Canadians have to pay the same price for oil as the USA. We don't have a Canadians first policy. We don't have a strategic oil reserve. Our government needs to wake up. A very concerned Canadian.
Marc
Just wait and later today you will see Harper unleash his Pit Bull (John Baird) to counter attack…
Two points, first the Conservative could not care less about Kyoto and have no desire to get involved with a Carbon Tax… remember they don’t want to raise tax (that’s a joke). Second, they still have not implemented a decent environment plan…
Murray
The Kyoto committee should be investigating China who just surpassed the US as the #1 emitter of greenhouse gases. Oh wait, China is exempt!
Thanks to the Liberals, Canada will have no chance of reaching its targets, so they can start their investigation in Stephane Dion's office (or backpack).
NT
I am embarrassed by the inaction of this (and the previous) government. We are not leaders any more, our record regarding the environment is horrible and we should all be ashamed of ourselves. Canada must do better.
Vince M
Time to officially bail on this poorly concieved plan.
Every politician that originally committed their country to targets is no longer in power. They rushed to look good on the world stage and we are all stuck with the consequences.
They get the glory with no accountability. We suffer the accountable consequences.
Dave Williams
I am ashamed of Canada's performance regarding the environment. However, I can bet my last Canadian dollar that fast talking John Baird (spin doctor) will have some spin on this matter. Shame. I am turned off Canadian politicians. Why can't we have an Obama or Clinton here?
IT Manager in Calgary
Oh, big deal. I've obviously established myself as a die-hard Liberal on this board, and even I think this Kyoto thing needs to just die. Harper and Baird have already made it impossible to reach the targets due to their incompetence, spinstering, and outright lying to the public about the economic consequences of being environmentally friendly, so it's time that Canada forged its own path, WITHOUT Baird and Harper. I'd like to see the next Liberal government take some real action on climate change, and not try to spin a lie to the public with an environment act that will actually allow greenhouse gases to nearly double by 2050, such as what the current CONs have done. But seriously... Kyoto is dead now. Let it die.
Edb
I'm sorry, did I miss something? I thought Canada was a SOVEREIGN nation! I can't recall any actual public debate or input prior to the Liberals commiting Canada to this useless treaty, now an UN-elected "regulatory body" is investigating?
Here's a plan Mr.Harper, after scrapping Kyoto, how about pulling out of the UN period! Let them collect their free money
somewhere else.
dave
Oh no! Kick us out of Kyoto money sucking scam?
Please feel free to kick away!
Dean
So in otherwords, big deal. What about the largest emittors? U.S., China, India, what about these countries. The act of their populations alone just breathing probably puts out more GHG than our entire industry does. I guess it would be impractible to go after them because they would probably ignore the warnings anyway. Going after the smaller inocuous countries is probably easier because we/they don't fight back much. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for cutting GHG but, let's get the biggest offenders first.
Bill
Carbon Credits what a joke if you are a bad polluter just buy credits and it's okay. The Great Green Al Gore has to buy them for his house - practice what you preach.
Ron
Who cares what the UN says about our Kyoto commitments. Anything that comes from an organization that ignores human rights the way the UN does is not worthy of any say in what we do in this country. Keep on with the enviromental plan we have now and can afford.
PROUD CONSERVATIVE CALGARIAN
Why don't we have an Obama or Clinton here. Why don't we wait and actually see how they perform before we say that? Every politician promises everything and anything to get elected. Saying what you will do if elected is a whole lot different than doing it when elected.
Auntie UN
Kyoto is a socialist plan on a global basis to transfer wealth from have nations to have not nations, another brain child of the UN. The UN itself is a joke. If Americans knew all the facts about the UN they would kick the UN head office off the soil of the state of New York. If bodies like the UN get their way, we will all be walking around with a microchip imbedded in our foreheads with a number, to track all finances, identities and so forth. These bodies need to be kept in check, no wonder the US is at odds with the UN and the Al Goes of the world.
Sean
Everyone should calm down. The planet is changing. This IS a sovereign nation and I welcome the audit.
NT has it right. The people that signed us up for this thing were elected by us. We are still responsible regardless of who we put in power this time.
Martin
We get what we deserve. All those saying 'Kyoto is a joke' will not be laughing when the EU steps in with tariffs & sanctions. That's what you get for breaking treaties, folks.
Canuck88
Come on SUNNY!!! this aint the usa, big oil does not fund the conservative party, there is strict rules in place for donations. also ghg's were not dropping under the lame dion in '05 they went up. If i were to post here i would want my facts straight.
Fly a kite KYOTO!!!!
toomanyidiots
Sunny
Don't try to blame the conservatives. The Liberals signed the agreement and did nothing. Using your faulty logic or ignorance you should be able to draw the conclusion that the Liberal party is in bed with Big Oil. There were no GHG drops under the Liberals.
Frank Buchan
To Sunny: GHGs were in no way dropping under Dion's reign as Environment Minister. Any blips had zilch to do with the Liberal government. Even the left on this argument agrees that after signing Koyoto the previous government did nothing at all for years.
As for Koyoto, it was and is a joke.
As for our environment, it is more important than protocols. Sadly, we spend so much time arguing nonsense about international agreements, we continue to do nothing as individuals.
Sean
I'm glad that our Government is ignoring Kyoto. I disagreed with it from the start. It was merely signed by a Liberal Government who knew they were on the way out of power. I believe it was an attempt to hamstring the current Government who has done more in a couple short years than 10 years of wasteful Liberals.
Keep Kyoto out of Canada.
Socialism is killing us
Kyoto. The accord only a clown would sign. What a joke.
IAN
A reminder for those who want to attack the conservatives over Kyoto:- The hypocritical liberals signed on and did absolutely nothing to achieve it's goals. In fact they allowed the situation to deteriorate. And remember the U.S. voted unanimously to reject this money redistribution plan while Clinton was president not Bush.
Rick Derouin
I can't laugh it's too sad, this is right up there with the our First Nations People going to the United Nations over Canada's lack of support.
Will the stupidty ever end.
Rick - Delta, B.C.
Robin da Hood
Sorry, but I refuse to accept, esp. as a Canadian, that Canada is above international law. Climate change is worldwide problem and all countries, particularly an energy pig like Canada, has to pull their weight in combating climate change. If Canada refuses to abide by the Kyoto agreement - that it RATIFIED - then, yes, Canada is and should be treated as a outlaw state and should be punished economically, for starters, in the form of carbon tariffs on its exports. So to all you right-wing skeptics and SUV drivers,.. take that to the bank and whine all you want!
Vince M
Sunny. No party gets heafty donations from anybody, especially "Big Oil", since the Federal Accountability Act of Dec 2006. That law was created by the Conservatives.
Companies and unions are banned from contributing. Individual contributions are capped at $1,000 per year.
Probably useful to look that kind of thing up before posting.
Andre
So let me get this straight...a commission with no legal mandate or authority is going to investigate Canada, a country which has 0.5% of the world population while it exempts countries representing close to 50% of the world population (China, India and US)? And on top of this, they are investigating Canada's contribution to global warming when the world temperature has been dropping since 1998?
Don't know about you but I think we should be really shaking in our little seal fur boots!
David
Chretien signed that agreement without reading the fine print.
He was idiotic to have signed without a plan in place to reduce our emissions.
Compliance would have to involve diverting huge quantities of tax revenue to emission reduction strategies.
I am certainly not prepared to pay more tax to comply when the worst offenders are not signatories to the agreement.
The accord was a ridiculous, utopian pipe dream.
Andrew in BC
Should never have joined the co-allition of Kyoto, bigger mistake Dionne's that while he was the minister of the Environment he did NOTHING to ensure that Canada met its commitments, and an even bigger mistake of the Liberals to vote such a non-productive member of parliment to be their leader especially when they should have known that this would be an issue in the future.
Even with the impossibility of Canada meeting its commitments today I would still like to see, soon to be demand to see, the Conservatives shake up the whole oil sands project and get some laws in place to save our country (our land)from dying. If you need an example of what happens when the land is not protected look at China and its desertification issues, lack of fresh water, disease, etc. This is a festering sore that will only get worse until somebody in power, or the people, rise up and take responsibility. I better stop now or my rant will never end...man this is frustrating to witness!
Roger T
What a joke this is, nothing but ways to make money from new forms of technology and to under mind developmentsof other nations. Our Gov't is doing this for show of face rather than helping anyone.
There are WAY TOO MANY of these organizations and protocals just like studies and reports that really dilutes the true purpose and meaning of the situation which leaves citizens to criticize and not believe in global warming. Tt really is about "KEEPING UP WITH APPEARANCES" for most of the countries that sign onto this!
DM in NB
Kyoto is such a pointless waste of paper (ironic), and I can't believe people are still buying into this.
It essentially says it's OK to pollute as long as you give money to poorer nations. Please explain how that reduces the pollution?
Boot us out of Kyoto, please.
rickj
After reading most of the comments I realize there are not too many people out there that know anything about international law and moral obligations to humanity.
God save our children.
Clear Mind
Oh dear! I've polluted too much, here's some payola Kyoto "Enforcement" committee, now go away. What a farce.
This sounds a little like mobsters coming in for their "protection" money.
MRC
Dean, you have the right attitude towards all this politically-driven-global-warming-theory nonsense. Right on!
I care about what we put up in the air, too, but I'm not going to waste my time spinning my wheels while nearly HALF OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION (who do not share the same civilized evolution, history, natural developments & discovery, culture, etc.) isn't going to care!
As long as I can eat, drink, & breathe clean food, water, & air, respectively, I couldn't care less if the Earth heats up to a maximum of 2°C within the next HUNDRED YEARS (as predicted by computer simulation with assumption of too many real-world variables).
ADAPT, you can't "fight"!
Victor
We can continue to clown around and point fingers at the political parties, but the responsibility to cut our consumption belongs to the population of Canada.
Until we are ready to make hard choices and use alternatives, we will continue this clowning around.
Very sad. Solar energy has been around since the sun first came out. So has wind if I'm not mistaken.
Josh in Ontario
Some of the comments on here are ridiculous. Firstly: Sunny, the liberal party of Canada, while in power, never introduced GHG emission standards of ANY kind. Harper was the first PM to ever set a target and make it mandatory by LAW for large emitters. All the liberals did was pay Rick Mercer to ask Canadians to be energy efficient on television in those silly “one-ton-challenge ads.” GHG emissions fluctuate year to year, but the trend was that they grew over 13% while the liberals were in office. The Liberals promised Canadians (and the rest of the world for that matter) with Kyoto that they would reduce emissions and they did NOTHING to fulfill their promise. To the liberal guy from Calgary who always posts anti-conservative stuff: for your info the previous liberal government made it impossible to reach the Kyoto targets, but if you want to here about the current made in Canada plan: the Tories made a 20% reduction target over the next 13 years, and they passed a law and are regulating big emitters, something your precious liberals never did.
Scott
Those of you who are saying on here that the previous Liberal government "did nothing" about climate change are getting your "facts" from the biggest liar in Canadian politics today - Harper. If you actually took the time to go to the Stats Canada website and look it up, you will see that GHGs went down by 6 megatonnes (that's 6 million tonnes for the CONservatives on this board) in 2005-2006, under Paul Martin and Stephane Dion. So please, take your regurgitated CONself-servative lies elsewhere. Harper does not represent the facts, he represents his own partisan arrogance and the rich oil companies, and that is IT.
McIntyre
Yeah keep saying kyoto is a joke, laugh it up all the way unti'll many countries start reducing there emissions while Canada continues to be the worst provider regarding it, and getting worse.
Saying Kyoto is a joke, is slapped earth in the face. It's meant to benefit our planet, and make it healthy. If you can't even bother to take a investigation (To only see where our emissions are at) and rather destroy the planets health just to not get investigated. Then you are a waste of space on this earth.
Paul Childs
First of all we are our own soverein nation. We abide by our own laws, not by some supranational organization that thinks they can force Canada to do somthing. We should tell this environmental panel to stick it!!
GodISscience
The thing that nobody is saying is the Government we have in power is largely composed of endtime fundamentalists.
Why bother limiting any pollution ? As "we" all know the lord is coming back very soon. When he does he will wave his hand and all pollution, greenhouse gases and human caused distruction will dissappear.
Not only is he coming, but the endtimers want to hasten his return. How are they so sure now is the time ?
Ken in Ottawa
Contrary to what many people are saying, Kyoto isn't a joke, Canada's implementation of it, by both Liberals and Conservatives, is the joke. I agree, Kyoto is dead as far a Canada meeting it's targets is concerned, but we signed on, so we need to honour our word and pay the piper in 2012.
Vince M.
Robin da Hood.
Kyoto is not an International Law. It is an International Treaty a.k.a. Accord.
It is little more than a signed promise to meet agreed-to goals. And like any promise that is made in haste, with poor information and in bad judgement it would be immoral to honour it.
Andy
The Kyoto accord and all the other "green BulLcrap" is just another way to tax us. You want change, go after China, India, Russia. OH but I forget, the liberal morons want me to pay for these countries to become rich and powerful, so that we may live in poverty with no job. It's a fad people, the "Green Bandwagon" will sure lose its wheels one day and hopefully soon.
Matt
Our government better not spend a single penny of my tax money buying hot air.
Paul Hansen
The sky is falling...the sky is falling...the sky is falling...
Buy into our scam and everything will be alright!!!
Jack M.
Canada, represented by a duly elected Liberal government signed an international treaty and, although the Conservatives, a minority government, refuse to honour it, it should be honoured or renegotiated.
Scott
Under investigation by who? What are they going to do, tell us we owe them money? What a joke! They'd better head to China and Pakistan and India etc. and try it there first.
Wayne
Total farce and not even news worthy. Kyoto was dead before it was born. Never has there been a more flawed accord. This attempt at world government will fail, as it should and those preaching the new religion will be shown as the false prophets they should be.
alain
First Kyoto doesn't work for Canada. Distances and climate alone make it difficult to use less energy. On the other hand 60 or 70 percent of the oil produced in canada goes to U.S.Last but not least, Politicians are a bunch of crooks regardless of the party.
Ray
If we are so concern about GHGs, Ask yourselves this question. What have you done to reduce your own carbon foot print?.
Kevin
So just to make sure I am clear based on the information I found on wikepedia, 178 countries signed the kyoto agreement. Of which 24 countries have a target of reduced emmissions by 2012 - Croatia, Monanco, Liechtenstein, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Latvia, Czech Republic, Romania and the European Union are the only countries besides Canada required to reduce their emissions. So this leads to the one big question. Where are the big producers of GHG's listed, ie Brazil, India, China, Russia. What about the oil producing countries such as UAE, Iran, Iraq, Venezuela, Chile, Mexico, Nigeria, Libya, Kuwait. Oh wait they all get a free pass. So let's cripple our economy while all these other countries get a free ride at our expense. The EU gets a nice benefit in that they have an 8% target reduction but now Germany, France, Italy and the UK get to use the reduced industrial production of the former eastern bloc countries like Poland and Slovenia as credits toward their reduction. I am wondering if Canada's negotiators at Kyoto were the same team that negotiated the sale of Long Island for some beads?
BOBT
GHG has been increasing since 1998 but world temperature has not. 1998 is still the warmest. Over the glacial record, CO2 has followed increases in temp, no preceeded them. It's time we stopped worrying about CO2 and started worrying about pollution (poisons)that actually causes health problems (sulphur, etc)
AJ
The polarity in the country is mind boggling. East vs West. Religion/faith versus science.
Trent
The way I see it is we need global warming. We need to cull a billion or so people because this planet is overpopulated. Soon there will be food riots and more war for resources. Time for nature to hit the reset button. (Un)Natural selection at its finest.
Kevin
Let me put it this way. Out of the top 25 countries listed as top GHG producers in 2000 per capita (this takes away the arguement about the size of a country) only the following four countries are required to reduce their production - Canada (12th), Luxembourg (16th), Estonia (19th)
Ireland (21st). Wouldn't an intelligent, rational, highly educated person think that the best way to reduce overall GHG production is to make sure that the top 25 producers per capita were made to reduce their output but apparently only the Irish, Canadians, Estonians and Luxembourgians (sp?) fit that category.

61% of Canadians, support the implementation of a carbon tax.
Read 'em, and weep.
How many of the people who took the time and effort to post a written comment supported your carbon tax?
How many of the people who clicked a YES or No in a poll, which you didn't bother or evaded showing a link/source, even know what a carbon tax is and the implications of implementing such a tax? As you failed to mention is "Harris-Decima president Bruce Anderson says it's not clear how a carbon tax would play out in an election campaign because public opinion would obviously be swayed by the debate about costs vs. benefits" so we will have to wait and see whether your crew will walk the talk.
I don't know. But you and your buddy Harper just loooooove polls, so I thought maybe that might speak to you.
Guess if it doesn't say what you like, it's not a, good poll?
lol.
