City hall bureau chief
Around 2:30 p.m. yesterday, Councillor Karen Stintz was explaining to a reporter how she doesn't agree with Mayor David Miller's leadership style but understands he has a tough job.
Two hours later, she heard Miller was talking about slamming the doors on the Sheppard subway and hiking TTC fares to deal with a potential financial crisis. She quickly placed a call to the Star.
"I take it all back," she said. "If his first approach is to cut a subway line, he clearly hasn't listened to the people. There's a thoughtful way we can build our case or there's a reactionist, brinksmanship role we can play. I would argue our job and our challenge is to build the thoughtful case, and this is not the way. That is not leadership. That is petulance – `I'm not going to get my way so I'm going to close a subway route.'"
