The overline atop the front page photo in Monday's edition read, "Quebec joins Afghan mission." Those four words caused a handful of readers to send us in notes similar to the one below, each questioning our wording and the meaning behind it.
Excuse me, but since when does a province join a Canadian military mission? These are Canadian soldiers being sent to a Canadian mission. Would you report, “Alberta joins Afghan mission?” If not, then why the special mention of Quebec?
Sadly, everyone knows why: Quebec is special, unique and sensitive, and doesn’t support the mission. If and when Quebec finally does leave Canada, then you can report if Quebec joins the Afghan mission. Until then, please do not feed the province’s ego.
Maureen Matthew, Regina.
