Residents frustrated by garbage pickup change

The recently changed garbage collection schedule in the former city of York has left hundreds of thousands of homeowners confused and angry.
The pickup change, which took effect two weeks ago, affects 250,000 homes between Victoria Park and the Humber River.
"Our garage is stinking pretty bad and I've got kids that are not happy," said resident Lysa Springer, who said her street was missed by city crews.
"I happened to be aware and that's why we did put the garbage out on time and it still wasn't picked up," added another frustrated homeowner.
City officials say the change has been advertised on posters, media boards and on their website. New pickup calendars were also sent out earlier this summer.
"One of the problems is that a lot people claim they didn't get this schedule or couldn't find it," said Rob Orpin, director of solid waste collections.
"It was delivered in June and July. It might have looked like junk mail, it might have been thrown out or people haven't followed it, so they've following the old schedule, and unfortunately the old schedule doesn't coincide with the new schedule."
The city received between 5,000 and 10,000 complaints by phone each day when the change first took effect, with homeowners angry their garbage hadn't been picked up.
To help ease the confusion, workers are going out and circulating more calendars.
The city's move to overhaul the garbage pickup will save Toronto about $4 million a year as routes that had been contracted out will now be serviced by city workers.
