More cuts, more anger
Aug. 18
Since Mayor David Miller's shocking announcement that community centres will be closed on Mondays, much has been written about the loss of children's and young adult programs. Well, what about seniors' programs?
Last Monday, our Senior Cloggers met for a drop-in class, offered by our dedicated instructor, Wayne Kralik, and made possible by the staff at Scarborough Village Community Centre, where we have danced on Mondays from September until June for many years. On that morning, our usual jovial group was a sombre lot, devastated by the news of losing our program.
We do our best to stay out of the health-care system by keeping active and fit. We've been paying taxes for longer than anyone. And this is the thanks we get?
Obviously, Miller didn't check the parks and recreation "Fun Guide," or he would have seen that cancelling 103 Monday classes in 15 Scarborough community centres, with anywhere from 20 to 75 members per class paying $18 per session, is not going to save the city money.
You can bet on it – when the next election rolls around, Miller will discover the wrath of thousands of seniors.
