Ford sneers at probe |
Councillor Rob Ford insists nobody else needs to know details about how he spends his money while performing his duties as a city councillor.
City council directed Auditor General Jeffrey Griffiths and Integrity Commissioner David Mullan to look into the lack of office-budget spending by Ford and another penny-pinching councillor, Doug Holyday.
Ford, who filed no office budget expenditures last year, estimated he spent $500 to $1,000 of his own money on business.
"It's nobody's business what you do with your own personal money," he said. "If it's taxpayers' money, yes, then everyone has every right to ask where every single cent is being spent, but not your own personal money."
Despite objections from Ford, council also directed civic officials to charge Ford's 2006 office budget $1,123 in rent for use of an office at the city-owned Etobicoke civic centre.
City policy dictates costs for postage and distribution, printing services, photocopying and advertising and promotion must be paid from a councillor's office budget -- and not personal funds. The policy does not apply to things like meeting expenses, mileage claims, cellphones, office equipment and supplies, parking and travel.
Mullan said he expected to present his report in time for city council's October meeting.
