John Oakley: A wake up call from Minneapolis
Like the proverbial tree falling in the forest, if a bridge collapses in Minnesota, claiming several lives, can we be confident the same thing can’t happen in Toronto? In this city, crumbling infrastructure is the elephant in the room. The tragedy in Minneapolis is a wakeup call. It’s time for the finger-pointing and buck-passing politicians at all three levels of government to get on the same page on this pressing matter. As city and state authorities sift through the debris in Minneapolis looking for the cause of the collapse, the list of possibilities will run the gamut from shoddy workmanship to poor planning and design to quality of materials and even the corrosive nature of pigeon poop. In other words, an infrastructural examination conducted along the lines of a CSI forensic investigation. Sadly, it’s after the fact for the folks in Minnesota, but here in Toronto , we should expect nothing less. And that’s just the start. |
