A man who police say was stabbed by one or more panhandlers earlier this week has died.
Police said 32-year-old Ross Hammond, who was stabbed Thursday after an argument escalated into violence, succumbed to his wounds early Saturday morning.
The victim was walking near Queen Street West and Gore Vale Avenue shortly after 12:30 a.m. with a friend when he was approached by panhandlers asking for money, Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux said during a press conference.
Giroux said the two men refused to give the suspects money, and a verbal dispute ensued.
The argument escalated and the victim was stabbed several times in the chest and back. His friend was also assaulted, Giroux said.
Hammond was taken to St. Michael's hospital in serious condition, where he underwent a number of emergency surgeries. His condition deteriorated until he died Saturday.
Four panhandlers, all in their early 20s, currently face charges of aggravated assault and weapons offences, but Giroux said he expected the charges to be upgraded in light of Hammond's death.

What ticks me off most is the comment that the main stabber was mentally ill. I'm so tired of people using mental illness as an excuse for all sorts of terrible behaviour and as a rationalisation for not getting one's s*** together! If you're too crazy to function like a normal human being you shouldn't be allowed to freely walk the streets.
I've often joked that all those types should be sent to some abandoned mining town up north. If they want to lay around all day and just do drugs or drink or do nothing at all I don't see why they have the right to do so in downtown Toronto.
I don't recall a time when "panhandling" has reached such epidemic levels and you can't go anywhere in the GTA, at least from my experience, where you are immune to them and many of them are professional panhandlers. The days of mooching for some cigarettes, a cheap bottle of wine or loose change is over. Social in-activists will blame Harris but this trend is country wide .
