Ashton Should Consider Himself Fortunate

Getting out from under the thumb of Comrade Miller is akin to Tony Soprano allowing one of his bosses to "retire."

Ashton's in the doghouse

By SUE-ANN LEVY

Coun. Brian Ashton says he feels "liberated" to no longer be a member of Mayor David Miller's inner circle.

"I have my voice and my vote back," he told me just days after the mayor dumped him from his influential duties on council for daring to break ranks during July's vote on two controversial new taxes.

"I feel very good about it ... I think I can help hold the mayor accountable to the broader council," added Ashton, whose vote narrowly won the deferral, foiling Miller's plans, at least for this year, to ram through taxes that give his money-hungry regime an extra (and easy) $365 million.

I'll say one thing. It was entirely predictable that His Blondness would swiftly remove any hint of dissension in the ranks by yanking Ashton from his chairmanship of the planning and growth committee and his seat on the powerful executive committee.

I always thought it was best to keep one's friends close but one's enemies closer. Not so with our thin-skinned mayor, who's made it abundantly clear in recent months that he has only one response to critics -- they're both tuned out and shut out.

Last word: In the final analysis this blog is a relief valve for my rants/raves.
